The sustained high pitch in Japanese appears as a long, flat F0 line on a spectrogram. This long, stable high fundamental frequency (F0) across a mora or several morae is what I describe as the “alarm sound” according to my theory of evolutionary alarm sounds within languages.

1. The Universal Acoustic Pattern of Alarm Signals

These features make the sound attention-grabbing, difficult to ignore, easy to localize, and emotionally arousing. Sirens, warning beeps, and emergency tones in human technology deliberately copy this structure because it works on our biology. Across many species — including humans — alarm and distress calls tend to share these acoustic traits:

  • Sustained high pitch

  • Little modulation (flat or nearly flat F0)

  • Abrupt transitions or sudden drops

  • High perceptual salience

2. How Japanese Pitch Accent Matches This Pattern
